poolside began as a recording project in a converted los angeles backyard pool house in early 2011, producing sunny tracks of subaquatic indie dance music in this makeshift recording studio. surfacing first in the form of a youtube video for the catchy track Òdo you believe?Ó poolside were soon gaining local and national attention, with djs like james murphy of lcd soundsystem, techno legend derrick may, and disco don todd terje spinning these tracks at events and a growing online following. throughout 2011 poolside continued making waves with a sound called Òdaytime discoÓ through tracks like their cover of neil youngÕs Òharvest moonÓ and original tunes. in 2012 poolside worked on a remix for longtime disco punks the rapture and held fans over with a new single and video for a song called Òslow downÓ as they prepared to release their debut album. that album, pacific standard time, was self-released in july of 2012. after the albumÕs release, remixes for artists like matthew dear, little dragon and foolÕs gold soon followed, as well as rehearsing and touring with a live band and doing dj sets around the world. as thoughts turned to a second album, poolside went on ice for a year to regroup, beginning to work in earnest on another album in the fall of 2016. while still revolving around the sunny, laid-back disco sound of pst, these sessions yielded the additions of up-tempo dance songs and more guitars, and generally more fleshed-out arrangements. poolside surprise released their second album heat in 2017. poolside have over 1.5 million monthly listeners on spotify and have fans all over the world. they are currently on tour as a live band.

hot off the heels of the beautiful obsolete machines lp released this month, radiuss cassette demo restoration project returns to form with the interpolation tapes series. the original source tapes had aged, warped and degraded and as a result we ve preserved the best segments, sampled and reprocessed with a vintage prophet 2000 sampler, studio 440 and various linn samplers to add depth and range to the original source material. we ve spent nearly an entire year restoring and interpolating over 100 hours of music, processing sound and redesigning the blueprints of this long forgotten project. every track was originally recorded down to an old tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life. it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and re-arranging these masters, regardless of the time passed, there s so much depth in sound design, raw emotions and when considering the limitations of hardware in the era these were recorded, they ve truly aged like a fine wine. we hope you enjoy this magical time in music, as we are very inspired by all that was happening in those years, theres undeniably something in the air, a mystifying energy, long may it live on.

this compilation spanning a period of 37 years features burnt friedmanÕs releases and edits thereof from vinyl-only labels (latency (fr), marionette (ca), dekmantel (nl) amongst others) plus 4 hitherto unreleased tracks, making them available on digital formats. friedmanÕs music from 1980 to 2017 covers a broad spectrum of played and programmed rhythmic styles that traverse not only club music from techno, electro and dub, but, above all, trace friedmanÕs own artistic development. a trajectory that owes a lot to his long-standing collaboration with can drummer jaki liebezeit, who died at the age of 79 in 2017. like liebezeit, friedman already explored even and uneven rhythms back in the late 1980s. this selection of 17 tracks documents this pursuit while bringing rough or discarded tracks to light, which did not fit onto any album or were intended for the nonplace label. the compilation runs the entire gamut of his work on percussion, keyboard, samplers and toys of all kinds using various production methods (tape, atari, midi, sampler, hard disk recording, digital audio tape). studio work (instant-composition, programming and recording) underwent major technological changes and revolutions in the 1980s and 1990s, but friedmanÕs distinctive signature style prevails throughout. surprisingly danceable tracks, interrupted by alien atmospheric periods, defy any genre.

the album is a collection of wonderful, emotional and very personal songs. written and performed by peter wangel, the lyrics are inspired by multi award winning, temporary norwegian writer karl ove knausgard and deal with very personal subjects from his own life. the trickfinger project was recorded 10 years ago with no intention of being released at the time, made purely for discovery and learning experience. -in my opinion, making music with no intention of releasing it is the best thing a musician can do for his own development in this day and age. the trickfinger lp was made in that mindset, and it was the beginning of a new musical life for me. when i hear it, it sounds like i am opening up doorways to new worlds, and i never have had that feeling listening to music i made for the purpose of releasing it and selling it.- all the music was recorded live onto a cd burner, through a cheap mixer. john would sit on a chair, in his living room, surrounded by five to 15 machines, and just keep programming and jamming until the track was ready to be recorded. there were no overdubs Ð recorded all live

an unreleased classic from the vaults emerges with beautiful reshapes by cv313 (recorded and reshaped from 2007-2016) this is where the sound of cv313 was realized, culled from cassette tapes recorded live (1995-2000) with nothing but analog/digital hardware, no computer in sight (excluding our commodore 64 midi sequencer, which is still alive and well today). the radius project has been absent since the final release in 2001, the first 12- appearing in 1996 (limited white label run of 100 copies pressed at acme pressing in canada) after revisiting these works we realized there was truly some magic here. this project was initially sent to rod modell & mike schommer shortly after they launched their brilliant deepchord label in 2001. they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. pianos have featured in house music since day one. there s just something about the combination of looping piano chords and a skipping house groove which works so well. in contemporary dance music the piano still remains intrinsically linked to house, though it was in the late 80s and 90s that the true piano house classics were created. we took it to our hearts. the emotionally charged piano riff became a defining motif of uk dance music. producers knew they only had to alight upon a suitably uplifting three-chord piano hook in order to unleash a tide of misty nostalgia for rave s halcyon days. ministry of sound are proud to present piano house classics.

claude debussy (+1918) was one of the most popular and forward thinking composer associated with impressionist music. his innovative and at this time new way to compose music with non traditional scales and chromaticism inspired countless artists from the likes of steve reich, philip glass, miles davis and herbie hancock. remarkable attributes of his music were i.e. the usage of parallel chords, bitonality and many compositions of whole-tone and pentatonic scales and all this surely reminds us on contemporary electronic music where you hardly find limits or boundaries when it comes to traditional, harmonic sounding scale tone music. after studying countless composers of the last centuries marc romboy decided to accept the challenge to edit, remix and reconstruct several works of his favorite french composer, ranging from ãla merÒ to -pr�lude � l apr�s-midi d un fauneÒ. romboy: ãone sentence of debussy impressed me a lot when he said that he simply intents to write new sounding music. this is and has been exactly my goal, to create kind of unheard soundsÒ. on the album romboy performs together with the dortmund philharmonic orchestra, the renowned conductor ingo-martin stadtm�ller, the well respected d�sseldorf based concert master miki kekenj and sound programmer ali khalaj. the recordings was directed december 12th 2016. its the first live recording ever released on an album where electronic sounds and classical components were merged in such manner.

island people is a new band project consisting of mastering engineer conor dalton, grammy award winning producer david donaldson, and musician and dj graeme reedie. on their first self- titled record, they present their collaborative work that evolved over the past three years. being based in different cities, namely berlin and glasgow, files had to be exchanged back and forth between the three band members in order to create tracks. for their delicate sound structures, field recordings and other sound sources were heavily processed and rendered unrecognizable. layer after layer, the tracks came into being quiet naturally, not only reflecting their continuous way of working, but also incorporating their different and individual backgrounds: Òduring the whole creation of the album, we never realized our actions were quickly leading us into forming Èisland peopleÇ, we were too busy having fun, making music and sharing ideas.Ó the result of their collaboration is a timeless music that is as open as a natural phenomenon, developing a certain feeling of euphoria over time. all in all, Èisland peopleÇ is a pure listening record in the best tradition of ambient.

peripheral minimal is proud to announce the forthcoming album, aus den anti-imperialistischen tagebu&#776,,,chern , by in namen des volkes. indv is the brainchild of hamburg resident matthias schuster (also of bal pare, das institut,geisterfahrer and others), and creates a more heavy-weight style of minimal synth in the spirit of d.a.f., or even early front 242. the tracks were taken directly off cassettes and reworked with added vocals, whilst maintaining the original 80s recording techniques of 4-track and purely analogue instrumentation, strictly no plug-ins or digitalism here! matthias has been actively producing complex synthetic sounds since the late 1970s, having released seminal albums and singles on respected labels such as, plastic frog, minimal wave and medical records. his passion for all things analogue seems to be irrepressible, devoting a considerable amount of time to myriad projects each with their own unique qualities and sonics. he musically switches from neue deutsche welle stylings, to minimal synth and proto-ebm with great dexterity and a rare continuing dedication. the album is presented in a luxurious digipak and limited to 300 copies. recorded between 1980 - 2015. artwork by kilgore trout.

a good place to start. her basic sound and image were interior-life bohemian, and in some ways she was cagey with her talent. she didnt belt or improvise broadly. she picked a limited range of notes and climbed into them, applying a pinch of vibrato, letting her voice fade and crackle. these tracks clearly demonstrate her guiding desire, which was to explore the possibilities of the slow blues in the late 20th century, whatever that might mean. some of the most intense recordings she made were english-language covers or japanese rewrites of american jazz standards, blues songs and spirituals, backed by only acoustic guitar and drums. she sang slowly, as if there were weights on her. and after a while of her working and your listening, youll hear it: the way she connects intimately with her task but keeps something private for herself (new york times)

in times where a compilation of 12-inch bangers passes as an album, telephones Òvibe telemetryÓ opts for a different approach. without being a departure from his 12Ós for sex tags ufo, full pupp and yours truly or his brilliant remix work for jos� padilla and vangelis katsoulis, the norwegian producer from bergen who calls berlin his home, hones sound, skills and aesthetics on his debut long-player. Òvibe telemetryÓ is inspired by the pure feeling of listening to house, disco and techno, prior to knowing what it actually was: ambiguous, euphoric, mystical and melancholic. sonic and physical experiences, which names and origins were yet to be discovered.

friedrich goldmann would have turned 75. macro is celebrating the composers anniversary with a luxury box set cd edition of the complete trios of 1986 - 2004 and his singular oboe quartet (2000). two of the recordings were produced by goldmann himself, and all feature musicians with a long-term working relationship related to and deep expertise of the composers oeuvre such as ingo goritzki, bj�rn lehmann, members of ensemble mosaik and knm ensemble. the cd is accompanied by a 48 page booklet, featuring extensive essays by bj�rn gottstein (artistic director of donaueschingen music days) and musicologist bruno santos, exploring goldmannÕs groundbreaking aesthetics.

two years ago i played at studio 9 in vilnius, lithuania. the following day i missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend linus, who took me to the contemporary art centre. it was there i spotted a book named ÔrojusÕ, that linus told me translated as ÔparadiseÕ. the word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. a few days after returning home, i turned on to a national geographic documentary named Ôdesigned to danceÕ, explaining the courtship rituals of birds of paradise. as i watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birdsÕ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. this gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these birds of paradise and their habitat. thus, rojus. leon vynehall 2016

* -while exploring new production techniques using old and unlikely hardware, the results were so unusual that i really had the sense that these pieces of equipment didn t actually create these sounds, rather they were in fact some kind of elaborate reception device that allowed me to tune into transmissions from distant galaxies. the music i could hear was actually the received transmissions of pop hits from those distant galaxies that were being played on their radio stations. i quickly recorded all that i could before losing the transmission.
* i consulted with dr andrew read, the astrophysicist with whom i recorded guitar treatments in 1999. he has worked on the discovery of the most distant galaxies and astronomical objects in the universe. together we came up with a possible list of where these musical transmissions may have come from.
